A Gluten Free Weekend in the Cotswolds 🍃

13 Feb 2026

There’s something incredibly comforting about escaping to the countryside — and even better when you know you’ll be well fed. Last weekend, I headed to the Cotswolds for a relaxed gluten free getaway, determined to prove that coeliac-friendly travel can feel indulgent, not limiting. From cosy tearooms to farm-to-table restaurants, this trip was all about fresh air, slower mornings, and food I could enjoy without a second thought. As someone who’s coeliac, there’s always that small layer of planning involved — but this weekend felt refreshingly easy.

Our first stop was a charming independent café tucked away in one of the honey-stone villages. The menu was clearly marked, staff understood cross-contamination, and I was met with something you don’t always see — genuine confidence when I mentioned I was coeliac. I ordered a fully gluten free afternoon tea, complete with warm scones, clotted cream, fresh jam, and delicate finger sandwiches. Sitting by the window watching the quiet village pass by, it felt indulgent in the best possible way. Gluten free didn’t feel like a compromise — it felt special.

Later that evening, we visited a farm-to-table restaurant focused on seasonal British produce. Their gluten free options weren’t an afterthought — they were woven naturally into the menu. I had slow-braised beef with creamy mashed potatoes and roasted root vegetables, followed by a flourless chocolate torte that was rich, dense, and completely satisfying. The atmosphere was warm and candlelit, with exposed beams and the hum of relaxed conversation. It reminded me that gluten free dining, when done well, can feel every bit as comforting and celebratory as any traditional meal.

On our final morning, we wandered through the countryside before heading home, stopping at a small farm shop to pick up gluten free baked treats for the journey. There’s something empowering about travelling and realising you don’t have to miss out — you just need the right places. This weekend wasn’t just about food; it was about confidence. Confidence in asking questions, confidence in businesses that take allergens seriously, and confidence that living gluten free doesn’t mean living small. It means discovering places that truly welcome you.
